Catch a 3D Film Aboard the USS Lexington

Old fashioned Film Projector

The USS Lexington is one of the attractions near Robstown that you definitely need to see at least once. In addition to exploring the ship and spending some time in the museum, be sure to stop by the Joe Jessel 3D MEGA Theater. It is completely free with your admission to the ship, so there is no reason to skip this great attraction!

Watching “Aircraft Carrier: Guardian of the Seas”

The current film on display in 3D at the USS Lexington is “Aircraft Carrier: Guardian of the Seas”. This film shows how naval aviation has grown in importance over the years as protecting the world’s oceans has gotten more complicated. The modern Nimitz-class carrier is considered a modern engineering feat and the flagship of any fleet.

In the film, viewers sit on the USS Ronald Reagan along with 5,000 skilled air and sea personnel doing their flight operations during simulated war exercises. Essentially, the film not only puts naval aviation in context but also gives visitors to the museum a glimpse of what it’s like to work on one of these aircraft carriers.

Show Times

You should have no trouble catching a viewing of the film as it is played on the hour, every hour between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. This current schedule lasts until Labor Day. Be sure to check the site for a chance to catch a different related 3D film or adjustments to the movie schedule.

Enjoying the Theater

The theater itself adds to the 3D movie-watching experience. It was constructed in what was originally the forward aircraft elevator area of the Lexington. The 3D screen is three stories tall and complemented by thundering digital sound. The sound system is courtesy of 6 channels and 12,000 watts, making it capable of realistically reproducing sounds such as Texas thunderstorms or space shuttle launches. Factor in the crystal clear image, and you almost feel as if you are in the film!

There are seats for 193 people in the stadium seating layout, including wheelchair spaces. For those with hearing implants, the CaptiView closed captioning system ensures you get the most of the viewing experience.

Don’t Forget to Explore the Museum

Since the 3D movie is included in your admission to the ship, you should definitely take the time to check out the museum and the rest of the USS Lexington as well. The USS Lexington was replaced by the Navy in 1990. Corpus Christi was able to bring this “Blue Ghost” to the city in early 1992. It opened to the public in October and has since been a naval museum. This national treasure continues to serve as a museum and an iconic site in Texas.
