Ever hear that saying “Where the rubber meets the road”? They’re talking about your tires, so maybe we should talk about them, too. Here at Mike Shaw Toyota, we want to see you safely on the road for years to come. While safety equipment like backup cameras, pedestrian sensors, lane assist and other technological equipment are great features on newer vehicles, your tires are still one of the most important safety features on your car, truck, or minivan. Let’s break down a few ways to take care of your tires, including some steps you may not have considered yet.
Under Pressure
First things first: The right amount of air pressure is crucial to your tires. You can’t trust under- or over-inflated tires to accelerate, brake, or steer properly. Also, over-inflated tires means that there is less tire surface that touches the road, which can be a safety issue. Inflate your tires to the level that they should be inflated. Also, rotating your tires and getting a wheel alignment are two great ways to extend the life of your tires. For most tires, it’s recommended to rotate them every six months or so; wheel alignments should be performed every year. You should also be performing visual checks on your tires every so often. You’ll be able to see wear and tear in the tread, or potential bubbling or worn spots in the wall of the tires. These problem areas can lead to blowouts, so they’re especially important to watch for.
Balancing Act
If you really want to extend the life of your tires, make sure they’re balanced correctly. Unbalanced tires can lead to rapid and premature tire tread wear. Get your tires balanced every time you change or rotate your tires, or have it done when you get a new set of wheels. And as long as we’re talking about tread wear, it’s not a great idea to mix-and-match tires. If you can, replace the entire set instead of just one or two tires at a time. This will keep the wear-and-tear even and could even reduce mechanical issues in the future.
