The Dia de los Muertos Festival is back for another year. The 10th Annual Dia de los Muertos Festival will take place in the Marina Arts District in downtown Corpus Christi on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 3 p.m. until midnight. Also referred to as the Day of the Dead Festival, the event is family-friendly and celebrates the cultural heritage of the people of South Texas and Mexico.

It will be a fun-filled day of music, dancing, art, community altar displays, and more. There will also be activities geared toward the kiddos.

Let’s take a look at the history of Day of the Dead celebration so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect if you’ve never been before.

About the Day of the Dead Celebration

Dia de los Muertos is typically celebrated on Nov. 1, although the Corpus Christi celebration will be a few days earlier. The tradition originated in Mexico, and it honors the dead. It is the belief that the dead would be insulted by sadness and mourning, so people honor the dead with lively celebrations. The idea is to celebrate the lives of the deceased. The lively celebration is believed to awaken the dead for the day so they can join in the fun.

Skeletons and skulls are typically seen throughout the Day of the Dead celebration. Unlike the skulls and skeletons that come out during Halloween, these aren’t menacing. They often have happy expressions, and it’s normal to see them in entertaining situations, wearing their fanciest clothing.

It’s also normal for family members to go to their loved ones’ graves during the celebration to clean and decorate them. They also might build small altars that honor someone who has passed away. The altars might have food, drinks, flowers, candles, and personal mementos. In fact, Corpus Christi’s celebration is known for its altar display. Members of the community are invited to create altars to honor their loved ones who have passed away.
