Handy Spring Car Cleaning Tips

Spring has returned, and the warm, sunny weather might be calling you to the open road. Before you head out, spruce up your car inside and out.

A Thorough Cleaning

It might have been a while since you’ve washed your car, but now that winter’s officially over, it’s time to unravel the garden hose and give your vehicle a good wash from top to bottom. Remember to park in the shade so that the sunlight doesn’t dry the soap too quickly and leave streaks. While you should use a soft cloth for the exterior paint and windows, you’ll need a coarser brush to lift the grime off your hubcaps. We’re due for April showers soon, so take a look at your wiper blades to make sure they’re ready for the rainy days ahead. The previous winter could’ve caused the wiper and rubber to degrade, so look out for cracks, and look to see if the rubber blades are starting to separate from the wipers.

On the Inside

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home. We spend plenty of time in our cars as well, so it’s important to keep them free from clutter. Take the opportunity to empty out the front and back of any loose items that might have accumulated, from jackets and gloves to papers and other garbage. With the clutter out of the way, it will be easier to vacuum the seats and floorboards.

Inspect the Essentials

While you’re outside with your car, now’s a good time to check in on some key components. After you clean the wheels, check the tire pressure, as it could have changed along with the change in temperature. It’s also a good idea to open up the hood to take a look around. Examine the battery for cracks, leaks, or corrosion, and look over any visible belts for cracks or wear as well. Before you close the hood, check your coolant levels, too.
